From Farm to Pillowcase: The Story Behind Our Artisan Peace Silk
Discover the journey behind our Artisan Peace Silk — from regenerative farming and compassionate silk production to the thoughtful craftsmanship of each pillowcase.
At Ethical Kind, we believe true luxury begins long before a product reaches your home.
It's found in the origins of the materials we choose, the people who work with them and the care taken at every stage of production.
Our Artisan Peace Silk collection embodies this philosophy. From restoring the health of the soil to allowing silk moths to complete their natural life cycle, every stage reflects a more considered approach to creating something beautiful.
A personal journey to the source
When I founded Ethical Kind, I wanted to create something different: beautiful silk essentials that didn't come at the expense of the silkworms that produce them.
Understanding where our silk comes from has always been important to me. That's why I personally visited the farm in India that supplies our Artisan Peace Silk.
Seeing the farming practices firsthand and meeting the people behind the production gave me a deeper appreciation of the time, knowledge and dedication involved.
It reinforced something I have always believed: true luxury isn't simply about the finished product. It's about the journey and the people behind it.
Regenerative farming: caring for the land
The story of our Artisan Peace Silk begins with the soil.
Our silk is sourced from a farm practising regenerative agriculture, an approach that aims not only to sustain the land but to restore and improve its health over time.
Restoring depleted soil is not an overnight process. The farm's approach includes a transition period of approximately three years to help rebuild healthier, more productive soil, although the time required for recovery depends on the land and its starting condition.
Rather than relying on synthetic fertilisers and pesticides, the farming methods include natural composting, intercropping and rotational cropping.
These practices aim to:
-
Improve soil fertility and support long-term soil health.
-
Encourage biodiversity and healthier ecosystems.
-
Reduce dependence on synthetic agricultural chemicals.
-
Create more resilient farming systems for future generations.
But regenerative farming is about more than the environment. It's also about people.
By cultivating different crops alongside silk production, farming families can benefit from more diversified sources of income throughout the year.
Supporting fair wages and more sustainable livelihoods is an important part of our understanding of responsible luxury.
For us, caring for the land and caring for the communities who depend on it should go hand in hand.
Peace Silk: allowing nature to take its course
One of the most meaningful differences between conventional silk and Peace Silk is the way the cocoon is harvested.
In conventional silk production, cocoons are typically processed before the moth has emerged, interrupting its natural life cycle.
Peace Silk, also known as Ahimsa Silk, takes a more compassionate approach.
Instead of harvesting the cocoon before emergence, we wait until the moth has naturally emerged before collecting the silk.
This means allowing additional time for the moth to complete its development — approximately 10–14 days in the production process described by our supplier, depending on the species and conditions.
It's a slower process, but one that reflects our belief that creating beautiful textiles shouldn't require sacrificing the silkworm.
Once the moth has emerged, the silk fibres are carefully collected and processed.
This method produces silk with its own distinctive character and requires thoughtful handling and craftsmanship.
To us, that individuality is part of its beauty.
Natural beauty, without unnecessary chemical treatments
Silk is naturally prized for its softness, breathability and beautiful lustre.
At Ethical Kind, we believe those qualities should come from the fibre itself, rather than unnecessary chemical enhancements.
Our Artisan Peace Silk is not treated with chemical weighting agents to artificially increase its weight, nor do we use chemical finishing treatments simply to create additional shine.
Instead, we celebrate the natural character of the silk.
Our silk is carefully processed and dyed in small batches using GOTS-certified dyes, with attention to preserving its distinctive feel and appearance.
The result is a beautifully smooth fabric with a gentle, natural sheen — understated luxury that doesn't need to be artificially enhanced.
Thoughtfully crafted, from farm to pillowcase
Once the silk has been produced, the journey continues through careful dyeing, finishing and craftsmanship.
Our Artisan Peace Silk pillowcases bring together traditional silk-making knowledge and considered modern design.
Each pillowcase is made to be enjoyed as part of your everyday sleep ritual.
Naturally smooth and breathable, silk provides a gentle surface against skin and hair, helping to reduce friction while you rest.
Available in delicate Blush Pink and timeless Black, our Artisan collection celebrates the natural beauty and individuality of this remarkable fibre.
Why our Artisan Peace Silk is different
Our Artisan Peace Silk Pillowcase is priced at £110, compared with £95 for our Everyday Mulberry Peace Silk Pillowcase.
Both are created with the same commitment to cruelty-free silk, quality and thoughtful craftsmanship.
What makes our Artisan collection distinctive is its traceable connection to regenerative farming, its traditional silk production and its small-batch character.
It's a difference rooted not simply in the finished product, but in the story of how the silk is produced.
A little luxury with a story worth telling
Visiting the silk farm reminded me why I started Ethical Kind.
Behind every beautiful product is a series of choices — how we care for the land, how we treat living creatures and how we support the people whose skills bring our products to life.
Our Artisan Peace Silk is an expression of those values.
Because true luxury isn't just about how something looks or feels.
It's about knowing the story behind it.
With love,
Lily
